Gérondif anglais – niveau intermédiaire
We can make a perfect gerund with ‘having + past participle’ as the subject or object of a verb to talk about something completed before another moment in time. We can also do this with negative forms, by adding ‘not’.
· Not having beaten his personal best was the most disappointing part of the race. (subject)
· The only thing she remembered was having eaten at the Ritz. (object)
We can also use passive gerunds with ‘being + past participle’ as the subject or object of a verb. We can also do this with negative forms, by adding ‘not’.
· Not being heard at the back of the auditorium was a real problem. (subject)
· The important thing is being understood by your partner. (object)
We can also use a perfect passive gerund with ‘having + been + past participle’ as the subject or object of a sentence. We can also do this with negative forms, by adding ‘not’.
· Having been seen at the celebrity party was the only thing the actor cared about. (subject)
· His proudest achievement was not having been put on the ‘worst-dressed’ list. (object)
